Orofacial Pain
Pain that occurs in the head, neck and face area is called “orofacial pain”. This term includes conditions of various types of neuralgia’s like:
- NICO – Neuralgia Inducting Cavitational Osteonecrosis (teeth or gum pain)
- Trigeminal Neuralgia (nerve pain)
- Odontalgia (tooth pain)
- Any kind of pain that radiates into the head producing headaches or other symptoms
For instance, when a tooth hurts, the source may be muscle-related. When the face experiences stabbing pain, the pain may originate in the nerve. Conditions like Burning Mouth Syndrome, craniofacial pain or eye pain, jaw joint dysfunction (TMJ), migraine-type headaches, and bruxing (jaw clenching) or muscle disorders are classified as orofacial pain. This type of pain needs the care and attention of a doctor who has experience and training in diagnosing and treating the disorders that cause these pains.
